The challenge set-forth in the Affordable House Competition was to design a 7-star, 120sqm house for a standard 12.50m x 30.00m lot, buildable for less than $250,000. Our solution, Cloud House, offers an innovative, flexible, sustainable and easy to build solution. The plan hinges around a service wall that centralises all services to the south, freeing up the remainder of the floor space for habitable space. Sustainability is achieved primarily through first principles – maximising glazing and outdoor living to the north, minimising glazing to the east and west. The cloud roof form underpins the ventilation strategy, vital for heating and cooling internal spaces. The house is designed for ease of construction to reduce costs. The final solution is an innovative solution for healthy, comfortable, contemporary family living.
