Conversion of a an old art-deco house into a high-performance family sanctuary with strong connections to the outdoors. The traditionally arranged home’s layout with living ‘rooms’ at the front of the house, was not conducive to family living.

The approach

& design solution

The traditionally arranged home’s layout with living ‘rooms’ at the front of the house, was not conducive to family living. We sought to overcome this by relocating bedrooms to the front of the house and living areas to the north-east (rear) with strong connectivity to the outdoor living space and northern light and warmth. The form of the new addition is a response to the existing landscape and two beautiful trees the client wished to retain. The much-loved double brick construction is mimicked as reverse brick veneer construction providing the desired textural quality, thermal high-performance within the target budget. The art-deco lead-light motifs from the existing house are the inspiration for the stair diamond wall and diamond brick patterning employed in the living room. The results is a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary for family living.
