The site is nestled amongst the snow gums on a triangular shaped block in Dinner Plain. Designed for a family of four with a self-contained studio apartment. After a vibrant user discovery process, we created the project brief. A much-loved beer garden and favourite family hang out in their Melbourne home became the linchpin for our design solution that equally sought to maximise the northern aspect of the site. Our design response is a building form that hugs the southern boundary and wraps around a central, north facing deck and fire-pit area. The form of the house is inspired by a traditional chalet, with a large over slung roof that protects a first-floor balcony. The roof form pitches up towards the street frontage to greet the corner bend. An organically shaped stone wall, whose pattern is inspired by the outline of the snow gum cluster, conceals the beer garden from the street.
