Maldon Primary School

Refurbishment

Modernisation of a heritage-listed gold-rush era school into a functional, accessible, light, bright contemporary learning centre. The century-old building had been subject to various renovations resulting in an inefficient, dysfunctional plan with a mix-match of styles.

The approach

& design solution

The century-old building had been subject to various renovations resulting in an inefficient, dysfunctional plan with a mix-match of styles. After a robust user discovery journey, we embarked on improving the functionality of the administrative and classroom areas and refreshing the interiors. Unoriginal layers of building fabric were removed. A new beautiful and highly functional. DDA compliant entry and administration area was added to improve the amenity for visitors and staff. Classrooms were re-imagined into light, bright, open plan flexible learning environments. Plywood tree walls, inspired by the forest surrounding the school, act as classroom storage and fun room dividers. The result is a fun, engaging and playful environment that celebrates and showcases the charming old schoolhouse.
