An innovative facility that cleverly overcomes flood-zone constraint by creating a sub-floor cooling labyrinth to achieve 5-star Greenstar. A new recreation facility for Bayside City Council - the new facility is the linchpin of an existing Bayside Council Community Hub that also contains a childcare and community center.

A new recreation facility for Bayside City Council – the new facility is the linchpin of an existing Bayside Council Community Hub that also contains a childcare and community centre. The project brought together a large and varied stakeholder group – local dance company, Gymnastics Australia and Bayside Council. Chaulk ran a series of user group workshops to learn about the needs and aspirations of each group and toured various state-of-the-art facilities to learn about best practice.

The innovative solution is a building that houses a gymnastics facility, cleverly accommodates a competition-size vault approach, dance centre, student-safe changerooms, offices and multi-function reception space with cafe. The 5-star Green Star building employed a passive cooling labyrinth, large rooflights for natural daylighting, energy and water efficient fixtures and rainwater harvesting system.

Through engaging research, interviews and workshops we identify the needs and aspirations of users to develop ideas and formulate the project scope. We are approachable and curious, always listening and learning to ensure the scope is clearly and accurately defined.
