Frankston Primary School

Early Learning Centre

The Frankston Primary School Early Learning Centre involved the refurbishment of a two-storey art-deco schoolhouse listed on the Frankston City Council’s Heritage Register.  Our charge was to convert the outdated building into an exemplar learning facility that supports 21st-century learning.

The approach

& design solution

The century-old heritage listed building consisted of load-bearing triple-skin brick walls demarcating ‘cell-like’ dark classrooms. A robust user discovery process defined the user needs and aspirations. The outcome is a light, bright and exciting early learning centre with three flexible and adaptable learning environments, multipurpose breakout spaces, teacher work-pods and an amphitheater that coexists as a library and home for the school’s fish and reptile pets. Large blackboard and pinboard walls with low-slung archways, evoking the spirit of JR Tolkien Hobbit Houses, ensure the spaces are customisable and spark students’ curiosity and imagination. Innovative planning and structural solutions ensured a tight budget was met.
