An innovative high-care facility employs biophilic design strategies for cognitive stimulation and healing. The high-care 64-bed facility is to be located atop a hill in the hinterlands of Templestowe on heritage listed site.

The approach

& design solution

The high-care 64-bed facility is to be located atop a hill in the hinterlands of Templestowe on heritage listed site. The design for the building is based on the principles of biophilic design and dementia care – the plan is arranged with four distinct wings arranged in a loop around a central courtyard. The exterior of the building is designed to respect the architectural idioms of the region including the integration of landscape, courtyards and terraces and the use of natural materials such as masonry and timber for wall, infill and roofing elements. The building is designed to achieve a minimum of 6-star Greenstar rating and has several sustainable initiatives including on-site stormwater management, rainwater harvesting and natural ventilation and daylighting strategies.
